FIRST IMPRESSIONS FASHION: Normally, Steven dresses pretty casually, usually opting for things like jeans and a t-shirt, seeing fancy clothing as exciting special occasions rather than an all the time. In Ill Met, he is usually not wearing much clothing at all since he's got furry horse legs, and usually just defaults to a simple skirt or loin cloth unless there is reason to do more. DEMEANOUR: SOUND: Steven is verbally expressive and has a lovely singing voice with an impressive range. He still sounds young but has definitely hit puberty. MENTAL INFORMATION: MAGICAL INFORMATION: His body is half comprised of magical light energy, and he can't survive without it. It's what holds his biological body together. Without that light, he will die. He initially lost this quality in Ill Met, but has recently regained it in a somewhat more faerie calibrated way. He technically has two brains, one biological one and one in his gem, though neither completely functions without the other. PREFERENCES FOURTHWALLING: I'd mostly rather you didn't. There's not much to be gained. PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Steven is a physically affectionate person when it comes to things like hugs, handholding, etc. He may hug people spontaneously, and is receptive to people doing the same back to him. He wears these sorts of feelings on his sleeve. PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: You can feel free to attack or try to kill Steven, he's used to it. When it comes to actual injuries, I'm generally not going to be interested in having him actually die or get maimed unless there's a good reason. Broken bones and moderate to heavy wounds are fine as long as the damage isn't permanent. RELATIONSHIPS: I'm open to shipping with characters in his age range, which is mostly middling aged teens. I'm not really interested in doing anything sexual, though, and I headcanon Steven as a panromantic asexual. Steven gets excited enough about regular things like smooching and cuddling. |

YUYA SAKAKI
For as long as Steven can remember being in the Hedge, Yuya has been there by his side. Both long term Spring servants, Steven and Yuya have developed an inadvertent codependance, relying on each other for comfort and feelings of safety. After Steven was punished for lashing out in response to Yuya's mistreatment at Helian's hands, Yuya was left alone to care for him while he spent several months trapped with the mind and body of an animal. They bear the trauma of that experience to this day, and it heavily informs their desperate attachment to each other. Romantic feelings have started to slip into the mix in recent times, but the exact form of their relationship doesn't seem to matter, as long as they can be together. They share almost everything with each other.

PERIDOT
Peridot is Steven's only friend from back home, and after spending three years without any positive remnants of where he came from, her arrival sort of blew his mind a bit. While early on he was terrified of risking her punishment, his promise to work towards escape together with her is a large part of what has spurred him towards more proactive resistance. She is almost frustratingly confident about their prospects, which is a bit hard to swallow for him after years of having his optimism crushed, but he'll do everything he can to follow her lead. At least one of them needs to have hope.

RITA MORDIO
Rita is a long term servant of Autumn, and while Steven has spent quite a bit time balking at his circumstances, Rita has never seemed to quit. Ever. Punished over and over for her constant and irreverant attempts to escape, Steven deeply respects her courage as much as he's simultaneously terrified for her. Ashamed at his own cowardice, he made a promise to work together a solution with her, so that she'd no long have to do it alone, with the hopes that it would prevent her from having to risk herself needlessly. Deep down, he desperately craves her approval, feeling that it represents him not actually being as broken as he thinks he is.

SHURA KIRIGAKURE
A relatively new arrival, and the first new Spring resident after years of nothing, Steven initially suspected Shura was going to be nothing but trouble. He turned out to be wrong. While she certainly has a lax and hedonistic approach to many things, she can also be incredibly, incongruously helpful and supportive. Maybe not with words, but definitely with actions. She's helped Steven out of a couple scrapes for nothing in return, and Steven feels increasingly driven to find out what makes her the way she is. Either way, he trusts her.

RYNE
Another new arrival, Steven was immediately won over by Ryne's vulnerability and kindness. He was very relieved to find that she'd been selected to live in the gardens alongside him, and has been going out of his way to look out for her. This has only become more intense after the Whisper's memory visions forced Ryne to experience one of his worst memories first hand, and it turned out that they actually had a lot of similar experiences, stemming from living in another person's legacy and finding themselves among a mourning family. She is incredibly special to him and he wants to keep her close.

JASPER (AKA "CHARGER")
A gem from Steven's homeworld, but not a friend. Jasper, now going by 'Charger' after her name was lost, first met Steven in the context of kidnapping his family and headbutting his face - and things have only marginally improved since then. She was turned into a horse as punishment for kicking the crap out of Steven (and other people) too much, and now that she's back, her relationship with Steven is as fraught as ever. She really, really wants him to fight her, to a sort of masochistic level, but Steven doesn't really get why. She's tied to so much personal baggage and trauma from his past, it's hard to make rational sense of anything she does.

SOLUS
Spooky but surprisingly civil, Steven has the strongest memories of accidentally annoying Solus in the library. In recent times, though, Steven has been trying to approach him as an ally, sharing information in the hope it will be shared with him in kind. Solus can be kind of condescending and Steven gets nervous talking to him, but not enough that it will prevent him from seeking him out where necessary.

INVESTIGATIONS
Steven has done some team investigations into the history of the castle, and has ended up being at the center of a few big castle events. As such, he has learned some special information, and he is the sort to share the wealth given the opportunity. Instead of just sharing it ICly I've decided to make a list of information that Steven will freely share when asked about it, and then a shorter list of most sensitive info and who he's shared it with. Yuya also has all of this info, because he's Yuya, and Steven tells him pretty much everything.

✦ Compassionate: The thing most memorable about Steven Universe is undoubtedly his unyielding compassion for other people and creatures - to the point that he has gained status as a revolutionary, almost messianic figure on the Gem Homeworld. Of course, in reality he is truly very human - he makes errors in his attempts to help people at times, and doesn’t always read a situation right. The key thing is that his heart is always open for others, and even for those that have caused him a lot of personal hurt. He feels compassion for others even when they give him very little reason to. Any signs of pain or even the most subdued cries for help will have Steven searching for the good inside of a person - even if it ultimately costs him. Growing into a teenager has made him slightly more weary (and let’s face it, traumatized) but he’s still willing to put in the effort for just about anybody. Often, to a fault.
✦ Harmonious: Steven dislikes conflict, and in his youth, often found it difficult to stand up for his own needs for fear of causing strife. As he’s matured, he’s gotta a bit better at speaking his mind when it comes to negative feelings, but there is still a lot he locks away for the sake of keeping the peace - his first priority is almost always solving people’s problems and reducing friction. In fact, his compulsive need to resolve issues can become overbearing and chafing when he’s at his worst. He’s grown up with the idea that his main use to other people is to be helpful and ‘keep the harmony’ and so when he is unable to do that he takes it as a great personal failing. It doesn’t help that history has shown him that angry gems will often force him to take the brunt of their upset, even if he is in no way at fault. Out of a need for a sense of purpose, Steven almost aggressively pushes for harmony among others, even if it results in him ultimately making things worse. If he can’t help people, what is he good for?
✦ Goofy: Despite often having the weight of the world on his shoulders, Steven is still really a goofball at heart. Though he’s developed some new teenaged prickles as he matures, he still has a somewhat whimsical air to the way he reacts to things. Such as, when his guardians are trying to goad him into a game of tag, the reasonable answer would be to say no and not react to being ‘tagged’. Instead, Steven opts to scream and jump off of a balcony to avoid them, all while yelling about how he refuses to play. He’s matured a lot over the years, but he still has a playful heart when he’s not being bogged down by his mounting emotional problems.
✦ Avoidant: Given the options, Steven would almost always prefer to keep his problems private. He handles his own pain by simply trying to not think about it - pushing his own personal issues out of sight and out of mind, while fixating on the issues of other people. A lot of this is driven by the entrenched need to not be a burden to his loved ones - he sees his own pain as an inconvenience to those around him, and so he tries to keep it hidden, as if they will not be interested in him anymore if he becomes a squeaky wheel. He’ll get frustrated and complain, but usually in a roundabout way, and is quick to drop something rather than go after someone for it. It takes a lot to make him tackle something head on - as much as he’d like to drown out his issues with aggressive positivity, it’s getting harder and harder for him to do so.
✦ Haunted: Steven spent several years of his childhood being hounded for crimes he was not guilty of, and ultimately being a caretaker for the adults around him. At multiple points, the fate of the entire Earth, or of an entire species, have come down to his ability to resolve something. This pressure, and the experiences around them, have left a mark. He has a damaged and conflicting relationship with his late mother, and a strained sense of personal identity. He’s done a lot of good, for his family and for the universe, but it’s come at a personal cost. As of yet, he hasn’t found a good way to sort out his own internal issues, and the events of the past follow him, no matter how much he’d like to leave them behind forever.
Where and how did your character enter the Hedge?
Steven was driving his car into the woods around Beach City to eat a depression pizza by himself, and accidentally ploughed straight into the hedge.
Additional Memories Lost:
✦ Beach City: Steven forgets everything about Beach City as a place on Earth, besides the temple and the strong notion that he lived by the ocean. He remembers people from Beach City, but he doesn’t remember how they all relate to each other, or what any of the buildings or businesses were like. For instance, he remembers some things about his townie friends like Sadie, but not the context in which he knew them.
✦ The Resolution to ‘Change Your Mind’: He forgets the details of how he made peace with the Diamonds, and he forgets that the corrupted gems were healed as a result. He remembers stuff after that, like travelling around the galaxy to do diplomacy stuff with the Diamonds, but he’s missing how they got from point A to point B. He does remember that White pulled his gem out, though.
✦ The Movie: Steven forgets most things about the movie besides him getting dunked on by Spinel, the idea of the injector and the original struggles with it, the idea of the rejuvenated gems, his mom’s old garden, and his final confrontation with Spinel on the injector. He doesn’t really know how any of these things got from A to B. It’s mostly in terms of “something bad happened to me/my family.”
✦ His early years: he forgets most stuff about his early upbringing, except for occasional bits about living with his dad in a van, and being taught music by him.
✦ How his parents met: He doesn’t remember how Greg and Rose met, or most of the stuff surrounding that - he mostly just knows that they were in love and that she died to give birth to him.
✦ Unimportant Information: He forgets a lot of random, unimportant information, like stuff he was doing on days where nothing noteworthy was happening. Basically, he forgets the context and connective tissue between a lot of important events, which leaves even the important things he does remember stranded. So, essentially, he forgets most of the stuff that happens between episodes.
